How to Pray The Sinner’s Prayer

If you search “the sinner’s prayer” on Google you will find hundreds of articles debating whether the sinner’s prayer is biblical or not. This is not one of those posts.
In this post, you will find answers to some of the questions you may have about the sinner’s prayer. I’m going to teach you how to pray it, and you will find the prayer at the end of this post.
What is the sinner’s prayer?
The sinner’s prayer is just you talking to God, recognizing that you are lost and need a savior. That Savior is Jesus, He is the only way to God, the only way to heaven, and the only way your sins can be forgiven.
The sinner’s prayer is expressing with your mouth what you feel in your heart. The desire to be forgiven, to change your life and to open your heart to Jesus. It is also called the prayer of salvation.
Is the sinner’s prayer necessary for salvation?
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Romans 10:9-10
In the verse above, you can see the requirements needed for salvation. You have to declare it with your mouth (speak it out loud), and you have to believe it in your heart.
When you pray the sinner’s prayer, what you are doing is declaring with your mouth what you believe in your heart. So, yes, it is necessary for salvation.

Is the sinner’s prayer biblical?
Based on Romans 10:9-10, yes, the sinner’s prayer is biblical. But you are not going to find the words “Sinner’s Prayer” in the Bible, that is just what people started calling the prayer of salvation.
Now, I don’t want you to get hung up on whether the prayer is biblical or not. Remember, prayer is just a conversation between you and God, He knows what is in your heart.
Whenever you are ready to make Jesus The Lord of your life, you just have to tell Him so. He is right there, knocking at the door of your heart, all you have to do is to invite Him in.
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
Revelation 3:20
Where is the sinner’s prayer found in the Bible?
The sinner’s prayer is based on Romans 10:9.

How to pray the sinner’s prayer
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Romans 10:9-10
I wanted you to read that Bible verse again because it is extremely important.
That Bible verse tells you how to be saved, how to change your life, how to accept Jesus as your savior, how to have eternal life and go to heaven, how to have a relationship with God. That verse will change your life forever, so it is very important that you pay attention to what it says.
According to the Bible verse, you must confess, but first, you must believe in your heart. Because you are confessing what you believe and in your heart.
Confessing just means talking to God.
Your prayer has to come from your heart, it can’t just be words coming out of your mouth. Salvation starts in your heart. That is why Jesus is there, knocking at your heart.
If you are not quite ready or are not sure if you want to take that leap of faith, I want to invite you to check out this blog post: How to be saved.
But if you feel Jesus knocking in your heart and you are ready to say yes to Him, just talk to Him and ask Him to come in your heart and be your Lord and savior. If you need help praying here is a little prayer you can say.
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I ask you to please forgive my sins. I believe in my heart that Jesus is your Son; that He died for me on a cross and you raised Him back to life. Jesus, I declare that you are my Lord and I open my heart to you. Change me and help me to follow you all the days of my life. Help me to be more like you and to do your will.
In Jesus’s Name, I pray.
Amen
