The importance of The Baptism of The Holy Spirit

The importance of The Baptism of The Holy Spirit

In a scale from 1-10, with 10 being the closest, how would you rate your relationship with The Lord?

What does that have to do with the baptism of the Holy Spirit you may ask? Well, it has everything to do with it, you will find out as you read this post.

Teachings like the baptism of The Holy Spirit and The Power of The Blood of Jesus are teachings that you don’t hear much anymore. Maybe that is one of the reasons why the church is so wimpy now days.

But we cannot afford to be wimpy christians. We need the power of the blood of Jesus and the Holy Spirit to navigate the dark days we are living in right now.

Being baptized and filled with The Holy Spirit is one of the most important things you need to do in order to fulfill the calling of God for your life and seeing His will come to pass.

If you want to see your life change you must be filled with The Holy Spirit, the beautiful and powerful third person of the Trinity.

When we are filled with The Holy Ghost we go forth to see things accomplished that we could never see otherwise.

Smith Wigglesworth

What is the Baptism of The Holy Spirit?

Let me give you an example so you can understand better. On a regular water baptism, your body immerses in the water for an instant, the water covers your whole being.

The baptism of The Holy Spirit is the same thing. You become filled, saturated with The Holy Spirit until it covers every part of your being and you become one with The Holy Spirit of God.

Now, you by yourself can’t really do much, but The Holy Spirit of God through you can do mighty miracles.

When you see someone being healed, it has nothing to do with the person who is praying for him/her; it is all the power of The Holy Spirit flowing through that person.

This connection of becoming one is what God wants. He wants to fill your life with His Holy Spirit so you can be a witness of His love and power.

Where does the Baptism of The Holy Spirit come from?

The Baptism of The Holy Spirit. What you need to know.

The promise

We can find the promise of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament in the book of Joel:

And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. And also on my menservants and on my maidservants I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

Joel 2:28-29 (NKJV)

And we can also find it in the New Testament, when John the Baptist was speaking to the people about Jesus:

John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Luke 3:16 (NKJV)

The Fulfillment

In John 16:7 Jesus was telling His disciples that it was better for Him to go, because once He was gone, He will send The Comforter. Who was the Comforter Jesus was talking about?

The Holy Spirit!

How do we know this?

Jesus said that The Comforter will convict the world of sin, and that is one of The Holy Spirit’s jobs.

Jesus told His disciples to not leave the city because the fulfillment of the promise that God made, was coming.

And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.

Luke 24:49 (NLT)

When the day of Pentecost came, Mary the Mother of Jesus, the disciples and many others were all together in one place. Suddenly, a mighty sound came from heaven and filled the whole house where all of them were united.

At that moment, they were filled (baptized) with The Holy Ghost and fire just like Jesus has promised.

On the day of Pentecost, all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.

Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

Acts 2:1-4 (NLT)

God gave the promise in Joel 2:28-29 and it was fulfilled at Pentecost.

What does it mean to be baptized with The Holy Spirit?

Being baptized with The Holy Spirit means to be filled with The Holy Spirit of God, the third person of the trinity.

By being filled you become more like Him and you are empowered to do the work that God has called you to do.

The baptism of The Holy Spirit is for everyone, not just for pastors or evangelists, we all have work to do and The Holy Spirit helps us, guides us and equips us to do His work.

Why do you need the baptism of The Holy Spirit?

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

My Pastor always says, ” You are a witness of Jesus Christ whether you want to be one or not”.

What kind of witness are you?

See, The Holy Spirit empowers you to be a very fruitful witness of the gospel.

Jesus said that we can do greater things than the ones He did while He was here on the earth. The only way we can see that happening is by yielding ourselves to The Holy Spirit and let Him work through us.

You need His help, you can’t do it without Him.

I want to encourage you to watch this little video from Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke. I love the way he explains our need for The Holy Spirit and I think it will really bless you.

Hindrances to receiving The Holy Spirit

There are 3 major things that will keep you from receiving the baptism of The Holy Spirit:

  1. Lack of faith: This is the big one right here. It is impossible to receive The Holy Spirit without faith. Faith is believing in God; believing in His word and that He can do everything He says He can do.

  1. Lack of love: In Galatians 5:6 the bible tells us that faith works by love and without faith, it is impossible to please God and receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. So, make sure you are walking in love and forgive those who have wronged you.

  1. Unwillingness to surrender: In order for you to be filled with The Holy Spirit, you have to empty yourself. Be willing to surrender your life, your desires, your dreams, your everything. You need to desire less of you so there can be more of Him. He will work through you to see God’s will come to pass.

And guess what? His will for your life is even better than you can imagine. Surrendering your life to The Holy Spirit will only bring blessing, wisdom, guidance, and strength to your life because He is your helper.

How to receive the Baptism of The Holy Spirit

It is God’s will for you to be filled with His Holy Spirit.

So, if you want the baptism of The Holy Spirit, all you have to do is ask and receive by faith.

Just like you did when you were saved. You asked and received by faith.

You can do that anytime, anywhere. All you need is a surrendered heart that desires more of God. Because The Holy Spirit is God dwelling inside of you.

Prayer to receive the Baptism of The Holy Spirit

Some people, when they receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, feel a warmth on their bodies, other feel other things and others feel nothing.

I want you to really pay attention to this: Do not go by your feelings; you receive the Holy Spirit by faith, not by feelings. So whether or not you feel something, it is your faith that opens the door to receive.

If you ask, you will receive.

Prayer:

Father, your word said that if I ask I will receive. I believe in you, I believe in your word. So today I want to ask you in the name of Jesus that you would baptize me with your Holy Spirit.

I surrender my life to you, I want less of me and more of you. I want to be empowered to do what you have called me to do.

I receive the baptism of The Holy Spirit now through faith in your word. I thank you for it Lord Jesus.

Amen

Being filled with The Spirit is an ongoing experience

As you receive the baptism of The Holy Spirit, it is your job to stir the fire of God that is inside of you, just like Paul told Timothy to do.

Don’t let that fire die. Be hungry for the things of God, and to experience all the things that God can accomplish through you with his Holy Spirit.

Remember, you can’t do it alone, you need the power, guidance and wisdom of The Holy Spirit.

Don’t forget to share this post!

A man filled with The Holy Ghost has ceased to be, in a sense, he has come to rest to where God is working. I mean that such a man has ceased from his own works and abilities and associations.

He will not trust his own heart, he relies only on the omnipotent power of the Most High, he is girded with another.

The man baptized with The Holy Ghost will always keep in touch with the Master in the passing crowd or wherever he may be. He has no room for anything that steps lower than the unction that was on His Master or for anything the hinders him from being about his Master’s business.

In Acts 19 the disciples who received the baptism of the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues and prophesied. It’s my understanding that the “tongues of fire” in Act 2 is the same fire John spoke of when he said Jesus shall baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, meaning “tongues of fire.” It’s no accident that it was called that. For that reason, when I ask someone if they have received the Holy Spirit as Paul did in Acts 19 I asked them if they have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and tongues of fire.

I don’t know of anyone who is gifted with any of the other sign gifts who doesn’t also speak in tongues. Tongues of Fire, dreams, visions, and prophecy along with the gift of interpretation of those gifts is how the Holy Spirit communicates to and through us. Just as a marriage without communication isn’t much of a marriage, a relationship with God without communication is not much of a relationship. Its all about relationship.
