4 Steps to Overcoming Fear in your Life

4 Steps to Overcoming Fear in your Life

I remember like it was yesterday when the nurse told me that I was having an anxiety attack, a panic attack.

I couldn’t believe it because I never had something like that happen to me before. There was no reason for it. I had a good marriage, 2 healthy little boys and a happy home.

But little by little fear made its way into my life. That one was just the first of several more episodes.

I know what is like to cry out of fear. I know what hopelessness feels like. I know the worry and the sleepless nights. But I also know the God that is greater than all my fears.

It doesn’t matter how bad I have felt, how much doubt I have had, Jesus has always pulled me through because He has been there with me in the midst of it all. He promised, He said He would never leave me nor forsake me.

So I want to teach you 4 easy steps that will help you with overcoming fear.

When fear comes knocking at your door, you will be ready to answer with these 4 steps. You will be ready to fight and you will overcome!

Just because you feel afraid doesn’t mean you have to be afraid. Just because you feel discouraged doesn’t mean you have to be discouraged.

Overcome Fear with The Word of God

What does The Word say about you?

What does The Word say about your situation?

What does The Word say about fear?

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:17 “take the helmet of salvation and the sword of The Spirit, which is The Word of God” In order to fight fear you must use the sword. Nobody goes to war without a weapon.

Regardless of the branch, a recruit can’t graduate from military basic combat training/bootcamp without proving that they can handle a military weapon.

Rod Powers

Your weapon is The Word of God. You need to learn what it says so you can be ready to use it against fear.

Find scriptures that speak about your situation, learn them, believe in them, pray them over your life and your family and confess them everyday.

Use The Word as a medicine to calm your anxious heart. Use it like you would any medicine. In his book God’s Creative Power, Charles Capps explains how to do this. I purchased this little book when I was having fear attacks and I highly recommended it to anyone.

Bible verses on Fear

“We can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’” Hebrews 13:6

“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
—Psalm 34:4

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
—Philippians 4:6-7

“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.”
—Matthew 6:34

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
—1 Peter 5:5-7

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Psalm 27:1

Fear will come to your life sooner or later. Learn how to overcome fear in these easy 4 steps

Overcoming Fear with Faith

Fear is not bigger than truth. Fear is not bigger than God.

Faith is holding on to what you know is truth even when you cannot see it. If you struggle with faith, I think this post on How to have faith and how to keep it will be a blessing to you.

Another book I highly recommend and is one of my favorites is Faith Foundations by Kenneth Hagin. This is one of the books we used in school of ministry and I promise you, you will keep going back to this book for the rest of your life.

This book will teach you how to use your faith, how to stand against the devil and how to grow your faith.

But, nothing replaces the Bible. Again, you need to find out what The Word of God says so you can stand your ground against the enemy.

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.

Ephesians 6:16

The Shield of Faith

The shield of faith is what protects you against all the darts of the devil. So, you need to use your faith.

Faith in what? Faith in God, that He loves you and He is always with you even when you can’t feel Him.

Faith that ALL His promises are true in your life.

Faith that His love casts away all fear and that He will make a way where there seems to be no way.

Work on increasing your faith. The Bible tells us that faith comes by hearing The Word of God. There are some great teachers of The Word that you can listen to that will help you increase your faith.

Here are a few of my favorite teachers of The Word:

The Armor of God is a great study book by Priscilla Shirer. She goes deep into each part of the armor and how we can use it. It’s a great bible study that will help you understand why the armor of God is so important in order to overcome the devil.

Overcoming Fear with The Words of our Mouth.

God showed us that words have power the moment that He used His words to create everything we see.

The Bible tells us that:
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those that love it shall eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:2

You can use the words of your mouth to overcome fear. Just because you have fear doesn’t mean that fear can have you.

Speak life over yourself, confess the promises of God over your life with daily affirmations.

Don’t identify yourself as a fearful person or as a person that suffers from anxiety or panic attacks; your identity is in Christ. You are who He says you are. You are an overcomer!

Go to the Bible, write down verses that apply to your situation and start speaking to your mountain. Tell fear that there is no room for him. Tell fear that you are not afraid because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.

When the devil comes to deceive you with fearful thoughts be like Jesus and answer him…IT IS WRITTEN!

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony

Revelation 12:11

Overcome Fear by Winning the Battle in your Mind

When fear comes with one thought after another, and each one brings more and more fear into our lives.

We need to get a hold of our thought life because the battle is in our minds. We need to renew our minds and cast out every thought that does not align with The Word of God.

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5

You can win the battle of your mind by meditating on the things that God wants you to think and by rejecting the things that don’t come from Him. If it kills, steals or destroys it doesn’t come from God.

I found this great video called Battle Strategies to Renew your Mind by Joyce Meyer. Please take time and watch it. It will be a blessing to your life.

In her book Battlefield of the Mind you can find more strategies and more encouragement to help you overcome fear and anxiety.

One last thing

You got this! You can overcome fear and when you do you can teach others how you did it!!!

Watch this 3 minute video and let it be your battle cry and your confession: I can handle it.

These 4 biblical steps will help you overcome fear and anxiety.
There lots of people that deal with fear and anxiety every day. Learn the steps to overcome them.

I wear a necklace with the serenity prayer on it. If I ever feel panicky about something I just try to remember that prayer.

‘We need to get a hold of our thought life because the battle is in our minds’ … How true this is. Living with cancer has graced me with a lot of practice of listening to God (LOVE) instead of my own mind (FEAR). I take comfort in allowing the path God has laid before me, and I often need to gently remind myself to get out of the way and allow it to unfold. Nice post!

My pastor always say that if you don’t want to say to God just say “Lord help me”! He teaches us to talk to God daily since he is always with us. He uses the example, “how would you feel if you are with someone all day long and they spoke or talke to you”! So we should always talk to God. Great post!

Beautiful scriptures to help us combat our fear and anxiety. I never thought I had fear, but realized that I stay in my safe comfort zone because I am afraid to step out – that’s fear. I love the verse, Isaiah 41:10-13, Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand…..

Ah, yes – I read this and am reminded of 2 Tim 1:7, as well (I noticed Meagan said the same). I have to constantly remind myself of what God has given me and how to overcome the fear that creeps in on a regular basis.
