Are you a fake christian?

Are you a fake Christian?
Are you a fake Christian, is not one of the most exciting blog titles I have written. Chances are, it may even turn many people off because nobody wants to hear something like that. It is such a negative title yet our churches are filled with people that consider themselves Christians but they are not.

I’m sure I will not win any popularity contests with this blog post but that’s ok with me. We have a big problem in our hands, and to fix it we need to know about it.
Every single Sunday, churches are filled with “Christians” that don’t even know who Christ is. They don’t even know who they are in Christ, and what is God’s purpose for their lives. More and more people are just going through the motions and doing their christian “duties” out of tradition.
Please answer this question:
Why do you go to church?
- that’s how I was raised
- going to church is what you are supposed to do on Sundays
- I want my kids raised in a church
- my family is making me go
- so people can see that I go to church
- to drink some coffee and hang out with fun people ☕
- because I’m ready to hear how the pastor will encourage me today
- to show God that you are thankful for His goodness
- because the praise and worship team is awesome
- because I need something from God
- they are having a special event
- because it’s Christmas or Easter 🎄
Why do you pray?
- because I’m in a difficult situation
- praying for my food is what I always do
- it’s good to pray for others
- I only pray in church
- I pray to give God thanks
- my mom told me it is good to pray
- because I need healing
- I don’t really pray, God knows my heart
- tradition
- for God to bless me and my family
Why do you read the Bible?
- I like to read bible stories to my kids
- I only read the bible in church
- someone told me it’s good to read the bible every day
- the bible is open on the coffee table but nobody really reads it
- I read the bible when I need to prove someone wrong
- so I can fight with Jehovah’s Witnesses when they knock on my door
- because I’m in a bible challenge, reading the bible in 1 year
- I only read the bible to prepare my Sunday school lesson
- I didn’t know I was supposed to read the bible
The truth
Going to church, praying and reading your bible does not make you christian, fake christians do that all the time. Those are just things that Christian people do but is not who they really are.
What makes a person a christian is a true relationship with their savior Jesus. A relationship based on love and not on tradition. Being a christian is being part of the church of Christ, part of the body of Christ. It’s becoming one with Him and love Him in a way that makes us do certain things out of love. He is the motive behind our doing.
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
Luke 10:27
When you have a real relationship with God, nobody needs to tell you to pray because you are going to want to be in constant communication with God. You want to talk to Him and also listen to what He says to you. You do it because you love Him.
You will read the Bible because you know that is The Word of God and you love everything about Him, and that includes His word.
The more you read, the more you will grow spiritually and more revelation you will have of His word. All this will bring a stronger relationship with Him because through His word you will get to know Him better. The better you know Him, the more you will love Him.
The importance of being real
Place 2 glasses or cups on the table, on the first one, you will put a little of water. On the second cup, you will overflow the cup. In the first cup, we see that nothing really happens; it has some water, but that’s about it.
With the overflow of the second cup, everything gets wet; it runs everywhere. Depending on how much is overflowing, it can run all over the table and it might even get on the floor.
This is a perfect example of our lives when we have a relationship with God. You can have tradition, a little bit of knowledge of God but that’s about it. On the other hand, you can have a strong relationship with Him that spills, overflows and overtakes everything around you. The kind of relationship that changes lives, sees miracles and walks by faith.
This kind of relationship that will make you walk the Christian life out of love and overflow from The Father.
A strong relationship with The Lord will impact every single area of your life. It will bring wisdom and strengthen you so you can stand up on a strong foundation against the trials of life. This relationship will be the root that keeps you standing.
What can you do?
My friend if you can identify yourself with the first cup, if you don’t feel like you have a relationship with God, I have good news for you. It is never too late to take that first step towards knowing God. God is always waiting for you to draw closer to Him.
Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.
James 4:8
In this Bible verse, you can see that you have to take the first step. He is already waiting for you to move. All it takes is a change of heart. All it takes is a decision. A refusal to live a life just going through the motions and instead to live for Him. Making Him the center of your life, the reason you do what you do.
Finally
If you want to grow your relationship with The Lord, I highly recommend that you study The Word of God, pray for God to reveal Himself to you through His word.
The NIV Bible is very easy to understand you can check it out here.
The Message is another Bible that I like and I recommend for people that have a hard time understanding the Bible. You can find The Message Bible here.
Listen to good teachings; you can do it when you are driving, when you are getting ready for work or when you are making dinner. Pastor Andy Andrews from Harvest Christian Center is one of my favorite teachers of The Word of God and you can find his teachings here.
I would like to encourage you and help you to grow deeper in your relationship with The Lord. Feel free to check out my other posts that will help you in your walk with God.
It is the desire of my heart to be a blessing to you and help you as much as I can. You can send me an email if you have questions or just want to reach out.
“Making a decision” isn’t what makes you draw near to Christ. Repentance is what makes you draw near to Christ. Repentance IS the gospel. It’s what Jesus preached. It’s what he died for. So that our sins could be forgiven when we repent. the Bible doesn’t say anything about making a decision for Jesus. It does say a lot about repentance. Please go to the lord in prayer over this. It may not seem important but it is. Because without true repentance you CANNOT have a real relationship withGod.
You cannot repent without first making a decision to do it.
